Plastic is one of the most common materials in our daily lives. From packaging to household items, automotive components, and even medical equipment, it has brought convenience and innovation. But along with these advantages came a major environmental challenge. Despite the rapid growth of global plastic production, technology already allows us to give a new life to this waste through conversion into fuels.

According to recent estimates, global plastic production is expected to exceed 460 million tonnes per year by 2025. And in just one year, this figure could soar to an astonishing 600 million tonnes in 2026. In Brazil, the trend is similar. Production is expected to surpass 4.6 million tonnes annually in 2025, reaching 5.9 million tonnes in 2026.

These numbers highlight the urgency of rethinking our relationship with plastic — from the way it is produced to how it is consumed and discarded.

The Impact of Plastic Production
Plastic production is strongly tied to the use of fossil fuels. Most of the raw material comes from oil and natural gas. The greater the demand for plastic, the more pressure on non-renewable resources — and the higher the greenhouse gas emissions.

If no structural changes are made, the rapid growth of this sector could jeopardize progress towards a low-carbon economy.

From Threat to Solution: Turning Plastic into Energy
Despite the rapid growth of global plastic production, technology already allows us to give a new life to this waste through conversion into fuels. According to industry data, the plastic-to-fuel conversion process can generate:

  • 61% diesel oil – used in generators and vehicles;
  • 15% gasoline – also for transportation;
  • 6% gas – reused within the process itself;
  • Only 18% remains as solid residue (carbon black).

With just 10 tonnes of plastic, it is possible to produce around 7,151 litres of oil and 2,000 litres of gasoline.

The environmental benefits are clear: compared to conventional Diesel S10, this alternative fuel reduces sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions by 100% and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 35%.

In other words, not only is waste diverted from landfills, but the environmental footprint of the energy sector is also significantly reduced.

The Role of Renewable Energy and Green Fuels
Although most plastic is still derived from petroleum, alternatives already exist to change this scenario. One of them is the development of renewable-based plastics, produced from biomass such as sugarcane or corn.

Another important path is the decarbonisation of the production chain, gradually replacing fossil energy in industries with clean energy sources. This is precisely where green fuels play a decisive role.

By providing renewable energy for industrial processes, we can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of plastic production — an essential step to making this sector more sustainable.

And What About Consumers?
In addition to technological innovation, consumers play a decisive role. Reducing unnecessary use of single-use plastics, choosing recyclable packaging, and supporting brands committed to sustainability are actions that, when combined, make a real difference.

The projected increase in plastic production over the coming years is a warning sign. But it also represents an opportunity to accelerate the transition to cleaner and more responsible solutions.
